Paint a light color like cream. Best trick I’ve seen is to hang your curtains (if you have windows down there) above the window so it gives the illusion of height.

A good trick is to put up at least a 4″ crown moulding around the room about 8″ down from the ceiling. If you really want to add height place rope lighting in the opening on the top of he crown moulding and you would be surprised with the results. I have down this in my basement in Chicago after many open houses and complaints with the basement and received 10 offers when I had the next open house. Hope this helps.
