Back to FAQ list 9. How do I get certified to teach English as a Second Language (ESL)?
English As a Second Language is a supplemental certificate added to an existing teacher certification. To add an ESL supplemental certificate you must: • Complete a baccalaureate degree. • Hold a valid Texas teacher certificate. • Pass the appropriate TExES exam. (You can be working towards a degree, certificate, and supplemental certificate simultaneously.) To help you pass the TExES test 154: English as a Second Language (EC 12), you may consider taking some of the following courses: • EDC 371 Applied Linguistics and Methods in ESL * • ALD 327 Sociocultural Influences on Learning * • ALD 325 Second Language Acquisition * or EDC 385G Second Language Acquisition * • EDC 350W – ESL Practicum EC-12 (offered in the summer only) • EDC 370W – ESL Methods EC-12 (offered in the summer only) * These three courses are prerequisites to taking EDC350W and EDC370W. Please contact an advisor in SZB 216 for further information.
