The sugarcane industry in the Center South of Brazil uses very little water per tom of sugarcane produced and processed compared with other regions in the world. The industrial systems are practically all closed, with a high level of recirculation. In agriculture, sugarcane is not irrigated, using only rainwater. (See item B3.1) The State controls the use of surface or underground water resources through the proper environmental agencies. In the State of So Paulo the agency responsible is the Department of Water and Electrical Energy, under State Decree n 41.258/96. In addition, since 2007 the State of So Paulo has charged users of water resources for volume of water collected and consumed, and organic effluent released. This came into being under State Law n 12.183/05, regulated by State Decree n 50.667/06.
