Australia has apologised to the stolen generation, is the sorry enough?
The ‘sorry’ is plenty. At the end of the day, it’s just a meaningless word said at great taxpayer expense. The most important thing Australians can do is focus on helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders reach the same standard of living as mainstream Australians. That might involve ‘handouts’ but I believe it also involves education programmes and work programmes. People need training and they need a taste of what independence is like — without that, they’ll be unmotivated. I think the Government should put more effort into controlling the alcohol problems in remote communities. Alcohol should be banned in these areas, and the sale of petrol more strictly monitored. No purchase of petrol without ID for instance. Petrol sniffing is an appalling tragedy among indigenous children. Although a lot of the communities are remote, I believe that offering some sort of employment would be very beneficial, if somehow a company could be encouraged to set up factories or other businesses ou
isn’t it funny how ignorant australians are!? saying sorry to the Stolen Generation’ is a recognition of past wrongs, not some all encompassing phrase that will magically heal the rift between Aboriginal Australians and those others who refer to themselves as Australians. Stick your sorry if it comes with conditions! Contrary to some of those thinly veiled racist answers, no we don’t have free housing (my rent receipts say otherwise), no free cars and free this and that… more ignorance dressed up as rational thought. Some communities still don’t have the basics like infrastructure and services (Health, education, employment opportunities) that the rest of the population takes for granted. Maybe when those needs are addressed and the white population is properly educated into the history of racist policy and attitudes in this country, then maybe there can be a step forward in the right direction. izabelle: put your muzzle back on and come back when you know what you are talking about.
