I recently went out in the past month to look at HD tvs. Did a whole helluva lot of research, even got and returned some HDTVs to test… and I wholeheartedly agree that HD (720p/1080i) and HDMI (1080p) are most definitely still a work in progress for mainstream people. Unless you’re an A/V nut, it really has no purpose for most of us right now. EDTV (480p) res is supported by a lot of HDTVs, and can be upsampled a lot easier and better to HDTV than SDTV broadcasts (480i). After all that I learned, 480p has been around for a good amount of time now, is proven, and is still useful. Everything else higher is really just making things ‘future-proof’… one of those things where you get a tv that you don’t have to replace for years, or if you have a specific need for (HD television/movies/etc). I found for myself my own needs really don’t have anything to do with that future right now, and if it comes to it, I’ll get it then, w
