No. Multiple Medication Concerns [posted 12/04/98] Question: My 82 year old father is being treated for migraines and REM S Sleep disorder with the following medications – Depakote 250 mg 3x day, Florinef 1mg/day, Prilosec 20 mg./day, Synthroid .05 mg/day, Zyrtec, 10 mg/day, Occuvite, Calcium, Aspirin 1/day At night he takes 1 mg Clonazepam for the REM Sleep disorder. He is increasingly confused and still up several times a night and not sleeping well. Several anti-depressants were also tried to relax him at night and he has severe reactions to the combination. Are there any drug interactions possible with his list of meds? Will Advil interact with any of the meds? Answer: With patients of this age, I find that they are over medicated more often than undermedicated. Stop everything you can and start over. Focus on drugs like melatonin which will have minimal side effects. Ensure his sleep disorder is not his prostate getting him up to urinate. Lastly, see a gerontologist if this doesn’
