Audi A6 engine, piston shot through the valve, can this be fixed?
Actually, the valve generally is the culprit as far as “shooting through” goes. Unfortunately, this event generally damages the cylinder head, valvetrain, and the lower part of the engine (piston at very least). You would be well advised to source another complete engine from a reputable auto wrecker (believe it or not, there are such animals). This will yield the lowest labour and parts cost. It will still be expensive unfortunately, although you could save 50% over the cost of repairing your damaged engine. At any rate, most shops won’t want to repair an engine damaged in this manner and would prefer to install a good used engine. Any used engine that uses timing belts should have them replaced as a matter of course prior to installing in the car.
