At what point does someone go from being an acquaintance to being considered a friend?

I’ve always thought it was when you see them or talk with them outside of your “acquaintance” environment. So if you are students, then you see eachother somewhere besides the classroom. A work friend, you meet up outside of work. If it’s a neighbor, you go somewhere together. For me, that’s the crossover point from the acquaintance relationship to a friend. My reasoning has been that at that point the person is making an effort to be with you and it becomes a choice; versus, just being forced to be together because of same class, same job, lives next door.
