At what age does osteoporosis usually develop?
Osteoporosis most commonly develops over age 50, but depending on risk factors, can develop earlier2 and 1 in 3 over 60 will have an osteoporotic fracture. In women, osteoporosis is most likely to develop after menopause, when the protective effect of the hormone oestrogen is lost. In men, osteoporosis may develop later in life.
