Both are. I wrote the story with two strong protagonists in mind from the start. Ruth is a bit like the old kid’s toy with the motto, ‘webbles wobble but they don’t fall down.’ Gus O’Leary was invented as a sidekick for Ruth. As a male writer, I worked very hard to give Ruth a voice that was believable. My friends in the St. Paul PD tell me I was pitch perfect on Ruth. We learn less about Gus in Deadly Agenda on purpose. I wanted some mystery to keep readers guessing. And yes, Gus’ IQ is off the charts. This gives me flexibility with him in future installments.
