MANILA, Philippines—Manila has become a more expensive city to live in than last year, according to a survey by the global consultancy firm Mercer. Results of the Mercer Worldwide Cost of Living 2008 showed Manila ranked 110th among 143 cities surveyed in six continents. The ranking is up 27 notches from 137th last year. Done in March, the survey measured the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. It is the world’s most comprehensive cost of living survey and is used to help multinational companies and governments determine the cost of living allowances for their expatriate employees. By this measure, Moscow has been identified as the world’s most expensive city for expatriates for the third consecutive year, followed by Tokyo and London, which dropped one place compared to last year’s ranking.
