As part of their course my students will be collecting data and/or samples from human participants – but not for research purposes. Does this need ethical approval?
Although these activities are not research the College Education Committee and College Research Ethics Committee have agreed on arrangements for the review of these activities to ensure activities using methods commonly used in research with human participants are conducted according to the highest ethical standards. Applications for approval of these activities should be made by the course leader. Applications from Social Science & Public Policy, Humanities, Law and King’s Learning Institute should follow the taught module procedure for these Schools. Staff from the remaining six Schools (the Health Schools and PSE) should contact the Research Ethics Officer for their own Research Ethics Subcommittee to enquire about the application process.
