Many times people see a senior leadership position as some sort of a seat, as opposed to a job. All of sudden they think they’re expected to be focused at 60,000 feet. If you define it as a position, you’re in trouble from the start. It’s another job that requires a focus on longer-term issues, but also requires a continued focus on day-to-day execution to make sure that happens. If they ignore this distinction between job and position, they’ll lose focus on execution in the business. When I was going to run the North American operation of Coca Cola, someone told me that this was a job where I had to be focused on customers, focused on cost, and focused on the marketing programs.
