As an active police officer or peace officer, do I still need to take the security guard training courses?
Active police officers are exempt from all security guard training requirements. Peace officers who are currently serving in one of the following categories only are exempt from having to complete the the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Course, the 16 Hour On-the-Job Course, the 47 Hour Firearms Course, and the 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course: • Correction Officers of any state correctional facility; • Bridge and Tunnel Officers, Sergeants, or Lieutenants of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority; • Uniformed Court Officers and Court Clerks of the Office of Court Administration; • Deputy Sheriffs of New York City and Westchester County. However, armed security guard applicants who are currently serving in one of the above categories must complete the 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training for Armed Security Guards (firearms). However, retired peace officers who are not exempt from security guard training requirements and who have successfully completed the Basic Course for Peace Officers, may be eligible to apply for a waiver of one or more of the mandated training courses based upon a showing of successful completion of training that meets or exceeds the minimum requirement.
