That would be character references since it’s your first job. The longer they’ve known you the better. I’d include a teacher, clergyman or even an older family friend. It is essential because this is the only way they have of knowing your character. But please always ask the person first if you can use them for one.Not only does it show more consideration for them on your part, you don’t want the potential employer to call them out of the blue and start asking questions. It gives the appearance that you just put anyone’s name down. If you don’t care about what or who’s on the application why should they believe you’d care more about the job? Always take the time and fill it out properly. That in itself says alot about the type of character you have.

As an employer, references on a CV are most certainly not required. All that does is add more to the CV for the reader to plough through. If the employer wants them they will ask, sometimes it will be on the application form. As already said, you should line someone up by asking them if it will be okay to give their name – I’m sure your teacher/tutor will be glad to help, maybe the vicar if you know him/her. For this sort of first job, the employer won’t expect anything much, you haven’t had the chance yet to build up many contacts. Good luck!
