Yes, there are software programs that do translate. This is known as Machine Translation. However, the quality of translation is very poor. For example, the following German sentence was entered into the on-line box of a company that makes translation software: “Pfarrer Rolf Sigg, 81, ist ein grosser, hagerer Mann, der stets akkurat gekleidet seinem Dienst am Herrn.” The following English translation was returned: “Minister Rolf Sigg, 81, is a large, hagerer man, who follows always akkurat dressed to its service at the gentleman.” Notice that the software program does not even contain the words “hagerer” or “akkurat,” which can easily be found in any German dictionary, and so leaves them in the original.
