Aren’t there more wolves in Washington than just three packs?

Probably. Three resident wolf packs have been fully documented in Washington since 2008 – the Lookout Pack in Okanogan County and the Diamond and Salmo packs in Pend Oreille County. As of March 2011, only one of these packs (Diamond Pack) is considered a “successful breeding pair,” which is an adult male and female with at least two pups surviving to Dec. 31. Other records indicate that an additional pack may exist in the Blue Mountains, but this remains unconfirmed. In addition to these animals, small numbers of lone wolves also occur in Washington, most of which have dispersed from neighboring populations in Canada and adjacent states. Overall, an estimated 20-25 wolves likely occur in Washington at the end of 2010.
