Are you familiar with a non-surgical periodontal disease treatment called “Perio Protect”?
Answer Hello Lynn, Great question. The truth is, I don’t know much about “Perio Protect”. It seems pretty new and when I literature search not too much comes up. So, I don’t think there have been too many independent trials to test the efficacy of the treatment. So, it may work, it may not. I’m not sure. If it isn’t too expensive or if your insurance covers it, try it. Generally speaking, once pockets get to 5-6 mm or more, it is hard to remove plaque even with thorough brushing and flossing. There are lots of products and chemicals out there that can help remove plaque. The way I explain it to my patients, though, is that it is like scrubbing soap scum off of your shower walls or mud off of your car. You can use warm water, different chemicals, etc, but to really get the stuff off, you need to mechanically wipe it off. This is where brushing and flossing come into play.
