Are women at greater risk for a stroke?
Yes. Each year, about 46,000 more women than men have a stroke. Of every five deaths from stroke, two occur in men and three occur in women. This is because the average life expectancy for women is greater than for men, and the highest rates for stroke are in the oldest age groups. Moreover, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause are added risk factors.
