What does WIC provide? • Clients receive individual nutrition counseling and a variety of learning opportunities • Breastfeeding support • Participants receive benefits in the form of a WIC Bridge/EBT card which they may use to purchase food at any WIC authorized stores throughout Michigan. • The WIC program provides referrals to health and social agencies including Medicaid, food stamps, immunizations, medical and dental services, family planning, parenting classes, breastfeeding support and much, much more! • All infants receive infant cereal and infant juice after six months of age. • Access to medical care assistance • Women and children may be eligible to receive: • Milk • Cheese • Juice • Eggs • Cereals fortified with iron • Dry beans/peas • Canned tuna and carrots for women fully breastfeeding How does WIC make a difference? • Research shows that WIC improves birth outco
Yes! All WIC services are free to women, infants, and children, who have a nutrition risk and meet the income guidelines. 2) What does WIC consider as income? Employment wages earned before taxes, self-employment earnings, dividend or interest income, Social Security benefits, SSI, public assistance, alimony or child support payments, unemployment compensation, workers compensation, net rental income, and other cash income. Income eligibility is automatic when an applicant is eligible for food stamps, receives Medical Assistance (MA) or Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF), or is a foster child under age five. Income is counted for everyone living in the household. 3) What about fathers? Fathers of children under age five are encouraged to enroll their children in the WIC program. Just like any other parent or guardian, fathers can bring their children to appointments, attend nutrition education classes, and cash food vouchers for their children.
