Cowl vents (whirligigs) are being installed in some houses to provide further ventilation of roof cavities. The installation of these cowls is considered on a case-by-case basis. Nearby residents previously reported airborne odours from the landfill during operation. However, these odours are not an indication of underground gas migration. Council first suspected gas may be migrating through the ground from the closed landfill in mid 2006 and immediately commenced onsite mitigation works. Since this time, Council has been working under the guidance of the EPA to put in place measures to control the gas migration. Since that time 72 gas extraction wells have been installed on-site.
