Are Whales Protected?
Yes. In Australia, all whales and dolphins are protected. It is illegal to kill or harm them in any way. It is also illegal to import whale products from overseas and to export these products out of Australia. One of the first whales protected was the Southern Right – it was granted international protection in 1935. Unfortunately all whales are not protected in international waters on a small number of species including the blue whale and southern right whales are protected in these waters.
