Are volunteer preparers required to be certified by the IRS?
Yes. It is one of the best ways we have to achieve our quality goals. The national accuracy rate for 2004 was 0 percent. This past year we jumped to 57 percent. Training, certification and good volunteers have made the difference. Volunteers without certification are welcome to join the team in a capacity other than tax preparer.
