Are volcanoes located in certain parts of the world?
The tectonic plates are similar to large “islands” of the earth’s crust which float around on the magma (lava). These islands will typically be the size of continents. Where these plates rub against each other are called fault lines and they have the volcanoes and earthquakes. One famous band of volcanoes is known as the ring of fire and it roughly circles the Pacific ocean – Alaska, California, Equador, Chile, New Zealand, the Oceanic islands such as Fiji, Japan and Pacific Russia all lie on this ring and are all volcanic/earthquake areas.
