Are ultrasound scans safe?
Ultrasound scanning is a safe and non-invasive method. Unlike an X-ray, no radiation passes through the body. According to a research conducted at the University of Western Australia(published in the Lancet), ultrasound scans pose no health hazard either to the mother or the unborn baby. However, one must go to a clinic that has a trained sonographer. Ultrasounds are of different types: abdominal scans, vaginal scans, 3D, and 4D colour Doppler scans.
You may be offered extra scans to monitor the growth and wellbeing of your baby. This may be because you have had complications in a previous pregnancy, or have a medical condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure. You will also be offered extra scans if you are expecting twins. Ultrasound is like ordinary sound, but the pitch is so high that you can’t hear it. Ultrasound scans have been used in pregnancy for more than 30 years, and nobody has ever found them to be harmful.
