All electromagnetic waves are transverse meaning that the particles of the medium vibrate at right angles to the direction in which the wave moves. Water waves are also transverse waves. Electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to travel through however, unlike most waves, and this is because it is tiny electric and magnetic field vibrate, rather than any material, that’s why light from the sun can travel through space.
