Yes they are. I know some who have been audited regularly and others who have been translating as freelancers for over 10 years without a single audit. Prepare your return neatly, accurately, and honestly, and your odds of an audit plummet. Also, an audit is not tantamount to the end of the world. If you have been honest and have all your paperwork, the process is a minor annoyance. If not, then you are in trouble and I can’t help you.
