Topical retinoids are used to treat acne and sun-damaged skin. These include topical tretinoin (Retin A, Renova), adapalene (Differin) and tazarotene (Tazorac). Small amounts of these drugs may be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Studies suggest that topical retinoids do not cause birth defects (6).
