Northwestern University requires applicants whose native language is not English to provide a score on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam; either score is accepted. There is an exception to this policy outlined below in the second part of this answer. To be considered for admission, applicants must certify their proficiency in the English language by scoring a minimum of 600 (a paper-based exam), 250 (a computer-based exam) or 100 (an Internet-based exam) on the TOEFL. IELTS test takers should score 7.0 or higher. TOEFL and IELTS tests must be taken no more than two years before the quarter of entry. Applicants are waived from the TOEFL and IELTS score requirement under the following condition only: earning an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English.
