Are Tinted Windows Effective For Reducing Sunlight?
Yes. Tinted glass can be used as the outdoor lite in an insulating glass unit, with Low E as the indoor lite. The Low E coated glass improves the insulating properties of the insulating glass unit, while the tinted glass reduces the influx of solar energy through the insulating unit. The major obstacle with tinted glass is the reduction of visible light. A room full of tinted windows will often feel like a cave and the small summer efficiencies gained may be adversely offset by less visible light and a distinctive look from the exterior that you may not have otherwise intended. Also, we do not recommend that you apply aftermarket tint film to Low E windows, especially on the interior. This can result in excessive heat buildup within the insulated glass unit and cause premature failure of the seal. If the summer sun is a significant problem for you, carefully consider double Low E glass before opting for a tinted window.
