Are timber companies going to make large profits off these Sierra Nevada thinning projects?

Timber companies will help achieve our objectives by removing selected trees. Contractors are selected through a competitive bidding process. Those selected will receive fair compensation for their work in support of the Forest Service objectives. The vast majority of the material that needs to be removed from forests has little or no commercial value. It is too small, dead, or rotten. Some medium-sized trees, with a 30-inch diameter upper limit, would be prudent to thin to help offset the cost of removing the smaller trees and brush that are unnaturally dense due to decades of fire suppression. The largest trees cut in many areas would be 20 to 24 inches, always leaving the largest trees on each site.
