Are these two NJ Transit tickets valid going both directions?

No, NJ Transit One way tickets are only valid going in the direction you initially purchased the tickets. HOWEVER, if you happen to get a friendly conductor, you can always try telling him/her that you had trouble using the ticket machine and didn’t select round trip when you purchased them. I have seen them accept tickets, even if they’re going in the wrong direction and I’ve also seen them reject the ticket and charge an additional $5 surcharge for buying a new ticket on the train. It all depends on it you get a friendly conductor or someone with a stick up their “you know where”. Just to play it safe, I would buy another one way ticket going back on the platform at the newark airport station to avoid any surcharges.
