Are these concerns expressed by pilots legitimate or just individuals with sour grapes and poor decisions?
Answer Hi, Zachary: As you have already figured out, there are many perceptions out there about any career field. I talk to a lot of people who work in aviation as pilots, many of them are airline pilots, and some are in corporate flight departments flying aircraft for individual companies….and, all of them seem to love one aspect of the job: The flying part. It is the other parts of the job such as the accompanying lifestyle (being gone half of every month), scheduling, pay in the early part of the career (at the end it is almost universally pretty good pay such as $100,000 to $200,000 US annually depending on the size of the company you are working for), benefits and so forth. I think that some of what you are hearing are comments from people who have been in the airline industry (or in other flight jobs) for a while and have had to take pay cuts or benefits cuts or both to stay in it, particularly since the 9/11 attacks.
