Are There Times When Massage During Pregnancy Should Be Avoided?
If your pregnancy is high risk than you should definitely talk to your doctor first. Toward the end of the pregnancy massages tend to be a bit riskier. You should always talk to your doctor and always use a massage therapist that is certified to work with pregnant women, as there are certain nerve endings in your back that should be avoided during the massage while pregnant. A therapist that hasn’t been trained to deal with pregnant women wouldn’t know to avoid these and could cause problems. If at any time you feel pain or discomfort, including dizziness, let your therapist know and then call your doctor.
• Women with normal, low-risk pregnancies can benefit greatly from massage by a trained pregnancy massage therapist. However, women in high risk pregnancies should consult with their doctor or midwife before beginning a massage therapy program. If at any time during the massage you experience discomfort, tell your therapist immediately.
