Are there the typical American withdrawals before the British Open?
A couple, but not as many as years past. David Toms pulled out last week with a bad back (Tom Lehman might want to start sweating because this injury is supposed to be pretty bad.) Justin Leonard, the 1997 champion, is skipping because of the impending birth of his next child. Fred Couples tweaked his back at Loch Lomond and withdrew before the Scottish Open. He said he was going to Royal Liverpool and giving it a whirl. I’m betting he doesn’t finish two rounds. 4.) Is Loren Roberts the Player of the Year in golf at the moment? I go back and forth on this one, because he has some remarkable accomplishments this season. Problem is, Roberts hasn’t won a major. Woods, Sorenstam, Mickelson, Ogilvy, Ochoa and even Jay Haas are still in the running, but if Roberts would have put away the win at the Senior Players Championship, he would have a serious edge. 5.)
