I work in the Emergency Department of a hospital in Ontario. No,there are not sufficient beds, nor is there sufficient staff. The patients who have been admitted to hospital from e.r. must wait for a bed to become available on one of the floors. That means a long wait, as there is both a bed and a staff shortage. And that means that the patient stays far too long in e.r., taking up a bed (and a nurse) that could be used for the never-ending flow of people coming in through the emergency triage. It means we have no beds available to put the sickest of the people who walk in on their own,or even those who come by ambulance. The paramedics do a great job,but they are only human. They must wait by their patient, often in the hallway, until that patient can be off-loaded by staff into an available bed.In the meantime, the paramedic and his ambulance are tied up and not available for other urgent calls. It is nothing for our hospital to have ALL available ambulances for our area tied up waiting with pa
