There are 3 million packages of radioactive materials shipped each year. Radioactive materials have been shipped in this country for over 50 years. The standards used for the transportation of radioactive materials have been reviewed and agreed upon by the US National Academy of Sciences, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, the US Department of Transportation (DOT), the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the US Environmental Protection Agency. If an accident occurs, the carrier must report the incident to the US DOT or other appropriate agencies, such as the National Response Center. From 1971 through 1998, in the United States, there have been 401 transportation accidents involving radioactive material. In each of these accidents, there was no harm to the public or the environment.(US Department of Energy, National Transportation Program, Transporting Radioactive Materials, Answers to Your Questions, June 1999 By what routes is low level waste
