Are There Standards in Wilderness Medicine and Does Aerie Follow Them?
Unlike most frontcountry training, particularly for EMTs, wilderness medicine training has no state or federal oversight governing course content. Individual organizations dictate their own standards and curriculum, and, partly as a result, variation exists between various wilderness medicine schools. While this is true, there is also significant consistency between schools. The Wilderness Medical Society, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to providing training and guidance (primarily to physicians), publishes practice guidelines for wilderness emergency care. These suggestions are in some respects the de-facto standards for course content. Many wilderness medicine schools, including Aerie, follow most of these guidelines. However, the guidelines are not very specific, and there remains variation even amongst schools that adhere to these standards.
