Answer The date on which the siege of Leiden by the Spaniards ended, the 3rd of October (Leidens Ontzet/Leiden’s Deliverance), is still celebrated every year with large scale festivities, and…. with bread and herring. Other main holidays are the Queen’s birthday on April 30, and the celebration of the liberation from the Germans at the end of World War II on May 5th.
