Are there special considerations to installing a large-diameter, ceiling-mounted showerhead?
Brent Petravich, Houston, Texas Mr. Petravich: There are several issues that you should consider when installing an overhead shower. Make sure that the position of the head is correct per the shower design. Unlike a wall-mounted shower, an overhead unit could cover most of, if not the entire, shower with water-making it difficult to turn the shower on and off without getting wet. Also, most people prefer to step into the shower spray, get wet and then take a step back to bath and wash their hair. Consider locating the showerhead where it will still give the bather a “dry” area to lather up. If this is not possible, you might want to use an extension to drop the height of the showerhead and reduce the overall spray pattern diameter. Treat attics just like exterior walls when it comes to plumbing. You should take special care to insulate pipes that are exposed.
