Are there risks associated with Adacel vaccine?
The most common local and systemic adverse reactions to Adacel vaccine include injection site pain, erythema, and swelling; headache, body ache, tiredness, and fever. Other adverse reactions may occur. Adacel vaccine is contraindicated in persons with known systemic hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine or a life-threatening reaction after previous administration of the vaccine or a vaccine containing the same substances. Because of uncertainty as to which component of the vaccine may be responsible, no further vaccination with the diphtheria, tetanus, or pertussis components found in Adacel vaccine should be carried out. The decision to give Adacel vaccine should be based on the potential benefits and risks; if Guillain-Barré syndrome has occurred within 6 weeks of receipt of a prior vaccine containing tetanus toxoid; if progressive or unstable neurologic disorders exist; or if adverse events have occurred in temporal relation to receipt of pertussis-containing vaccine.
