New Hanover County Schools has a cutoff of Aug. 31 for a child to be 4 in order to enter its preschool programs, said Diane Emerson, principal at Dorothy B. Johnson Pre-K Center. But she said 3-year-olds who miss the cutoff can attend the Peabody Head Start Program at 507 N. Sixth St., which is free. Details: 762-1177.
