Dredging won’t fix the problem, according to the city of Wilmington Stormwater Services staff. Staff members told city spokeswoman Malissa Talbert that dredging creeks requires permits from both state and federal agencies that oversee regulations governing bodies of water. “These permits would be difficult if not impossible to obtain since this creek is listed by the state as impaired, with one of the listed causes of impairment being prior dredging. The dredging would provide no additional flooding benefits,” Talbert says. Stormwater staff members told Talbert that Mary Bridgers Park “is part of the flood plain and dredging the creek will not change that.” The creek in the section that overflows on a regular basis is more likely related to a breach in the tidegates, Talbert says. “The city has a project currently being designed that will fix the breach and therefore minimize the tidal influence on this section of the creek and reduce the overflows,” she says.
