There are a few nascent programs in the United States that might be comparable, such as the University of Southern California’s iMAP (interdivisional Media Arts and Practice) program and Rensselaer’s Ph.D. in Electronic Arts. An interesting discussion about similar Ph.D. programs was moderated by one of our faculty (Professor Margaret Morse) in the iDC (Institute for Distributed Creativity) Digest in January of 2007. The discussion focuses, initially, on our Ph.D. in Critical Practice of Film & Digital Media (then still a proposal). The archive can be found here. Scroll about halfway down the page for the beginning of the discussion starting January 10, 2007. Also, in the UK and Australia many practice-based Ph.D. arts programs have been developed.
