Are there opportunities to obtain EU funding for sports-related activities?
Possibilities to obtain financial support for projects related to sport are very limited at European level because the European Union does not yet have a specific competence in the field of sport. For the time being, the Commission does not have a specific budget for supporting sports projects. This situation may gradually change after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, which will introduce an EU competence in the area of sport for the first time, provided that the Treaty is ratified by all EU Member States.It should be noted, however, that sports-related projects can sometimes be eligible in the framework of other EU programmes, such as for example Europe for Citizens, Youth in Action, Progress, Daphne III, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Prevention against Crime, Life+, etc.
