What are they? Renewed? Were just getting off the ground. The local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council works with municipalities and counties to help them to adopt green policies in their design specifications and in their purchasing policies. One of the things being done in Chicago and other municipalities is to move building permit applications for buildings that are applying for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification to the top of the list. In some municipalities this can shave the time required for a permit from 3 months to 2 weeks, thus allowing a building to get out of the ground faster. Interestingly enough, Michigan is eighth highest among the 50 states in terms of green buildings. Five of the states which are ahead of us Washington, Oregon, California, New York and Pennsylvania all have policies which encourage building green and sustainable.
