Are there morphological characteristics of the pest that will enable efficient dispersal?
Adults have wings and fly strongly. The ability of adult beetles to survive adverse conditions by seeking shelter and entering what is effectively a facultative diapause, increases the risk of human aided dispersal. Are there efficient and economically plausible control procedures available? Resistance to insecticides is the major issue in control of CPB. Strict adherence to the principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is generally considered essential to managing this pest. Resistance to Organochlorine, Organophosphate, Carbamate and Synthetic Pyrethroid insecticides is well documented. The recent development of insecticides with novel modes of action has regained some of the advantages of effective pesticides, but the history of resistance development in CPB suggests that over-reliance on the new pesticides will result in rapid selection of resistance to the new chemicals. The Solanaceae are notable for production of potent secondary chemicals that have strong anti-feedant or t
