Are there many parallels between the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the present movement?
Though Maurice Ulrich rightly warns against geostrategic encroachment into Iran’s struggle for freedom, this should not (as it often is) set any limits on the duty of people of all nations to cheer on, and assist where possible, those seeking the right of a people, and all individuals within it, to live their own lives free from coercion from power grabbers or any stripe whatsoever. For example the fact that the domestic enemies of the American people are engaged in colonialist wars and the suppression of liberty at home is no valid excuse to muzzle Americans’ wholehearted support for freedom wherever it is sought. Many decent people around the world were blindsided into silence by the seizure of power in Iran by one bunch of scoundrels from another in 1979 – even while rightly continuing vocal support for the ANC in South Africa in defiance of calls not to “interfere in another country’s business”. Freedom everywhere is diminished by tyranny anywhere.
