Are there many cultural differences between Thais and Westerners?
The cultural differences between Thais and Westerners is huge. If you are just here on holiday then you may not see these differences, but when you start working with them you will soon start to see them. Firstly, Thais are much more relaxed than other cultures and this can be quite frustrating when trying to work with them. One of their most common phrases is ‘moment’, which translates as I will do it when I have finished what I am doing now. Getting things done can be frustrating as a result. Another difference is that Thai people remember the most random things, for example they could tell you the first time they met you, where it was and what was said, but try telling them they have to do something work related everyday and they will forget it by the next day and will need reminding – it’s all about what they think is important and their daily job is rarely that.
