Are there insomnia remedies for insomniac dog?
• By: Vetinfo El Segundo, CA Replied on 7/6/2010 In a dog that has anxiety issues, Benadryl (generically known as diphenhydramine) can lose its effectiveness to cause sedation. There are other drugs that are more specifically designed to calm or sedate dogs that are available from your veterinarian. If anxiety is your dog’s problem, then Xanax (generically known as alprazolam) may be a good choice to help calm her. There are other anti-depressant class drugs that are also used to control anxiety in dogs that may be more appropriate for your dog. There are also drugs available specifically for sedation such as acepromazine. If this circumstance of decreased activity leading to insomnia is a temporary one that will be resolved when she fully recovers from her cruciate ligament injury, then this drug may be a good choice to sedate her overnight. Your veterinarian can help you choose the drug most appropriate for you and her situation.
